Temple Of Gauri Shankar With Sculptures Dassal

The beautiful temple a fine example of art and architecture is datable to circa eleventh twelfth century ad standing on a high plinth the temple consists of a square sanctum and an antarala placed at a lower level and support -ed on two round pillars and two square pilasters. The richly carved door frame of the sanctum, with floral designs bears the image of ganesa on the lalatabimba and river goddesses ganga and yamuna on their respect ive vahanas flanked by saivite dwarapalas in the lower portions on either side of the entrance above the lintel of the door is placed a panel showing navagrahas. The pillars of the an- tarala are richly carved at the top as well at the bottom with floral scrolls interspaced with the images of gods. The square capitals depict vishnu, brahma,flying gandharvas and musici ans and a panel above the lintel shows floral motifs in nine niches. The pilasters show the images of river goddesses above which are panels depicting siva’s worship, dancers and musicians. The sanctum is crowned with a curviliniar sikhara and amalaka and its body bears chaitya windows carved in low relief, while the corners are interspacted with bhumiamlakas. The sukh- nasika over the antarala is decorated with blend of chaitya windows, floral and geomatrical designs. The five rathas of the sikhara show one large niche on each central ratha and two rows of niches mithuna couples / with floral designs, the other rathas.
